These
photographs were taken mostly near Wall Street and in midtown
Manhattan. I began working on them after I had been photographing
inside offices for some time. Getting permission to photograph in
offices was always a bit of a challenge, and partly as result I began
to walk the streets as way to photograph when I had the urge but not
the opportunity. These photographs also owe part of their inspiration
to a portfolio by Walker Evans published in Fortune Magazine in 1946
titled Labor Anonymous.
